Automation has established itself as a key player in the dynamic landscape of the packaging industry, ushering in an era of unprecedented efficiency and productivity.

To cope with the escalating demand for seaweed packaging, the company leveraged automation, specifically deploying Rockwell Automation's Delta Robot.

This strategic move enabled Hanyang Packaging to handle peak summer production without the need for an additional 10–15 staff members, a testament to the capacity of automation. The results also illustrated a noteworthy uptick in sales automation, which doubled in comparison to the previous year. Furthermore, the payback period for investment gradually diminished, leading to a return on investment (ROI) in just six months.

By implementing automated packaging systems, businesses can streamline their operations, minimize the need for manual labor, and optimize overall efficiency. Automation eliminates repetitive and time-consuming tasks traditionally performed by human workers, leading to increased productivity and reduced labor costs. 

The financial viability of a packaging automation project can be established through a meticulous evaluation of the current process, alongside an understanding of future processing costs. This includes capturing every detail of the existing process and employing Lean principles to eliminate wasted motion and enhance efficiency.

Consideration must also be given to possible changes in time, materials, labor, vendors, and warehousing services. It is crucial to design the packaging automation system to be expandable or capable of accommodating an additional packaging line if business growth significantly exceeds expectations.

Harpak-ULMA, a leading packaging equipment manufacturer, initiated a digital transformation journey to enhance the intelligence and connectivity of its packaging platforms. The first phase of this strategic plan involved standardizing the Rockwell Automation platform across the organization. This step significantly boosted workspace productivity and production efficiency. In the second phase, Harpak-ULMA employed augmented reality (AR) to optimize workflows and employee productivity, decrease costs, and cut down the time required for training.

In the final phase, Harpak-ULMA implemented predictive maintenance analytics, leveraging real-time production insights to improve operational efficiency, safety, profitability, and competitive advantage. As a direct result of these initiatives, Harpak-ULMA reported a 15% increase in profitability and is now well-positioned to achieve double-digit revenue growth.

5. Reduced Human Error 

One of the most significant benefits of automation is its capacity to drastically reduce the risk of human error in the packaging process. Automation provides a level of consistency, precision, and efficiency that may not be consistently attainable by human workers over extended periods. 

Automated packaging systems are capable of handling intricate tasks, facilitating quicker and easier transitions between different products, and eliminating the possibility of operator error during these changeovers.

Hamrick Manufacturing, faced with a time-consuming and error-prone manual changeover process for different SKUs, implemented an automated system based on Mitsubishi Electric's components. This new system provided precise control, simplified the transition between different SKUs, and utilized a servo motor's built-in functionality to handle complex calculations, reducing the potential for errors in the PLC programming.

The outcome was a dramatic reduction in changeover time, from 30 minutes down to just 40 seconds. This shift not only minimized the likelihood of human error but also enhanced efficiency, with smoother running motors and a reduced risk of failure.
