ISA Training and Education in September: Learn, Advance, Succeed

In September, ISA’s training and education programs cover a wide range of subjects including tuning control loops, cybersecurity, PLC/PAC automation, troubleshooting control systems, industrial flow systems and electrical principles and components used in industrial instrumentation. Also in September, Colorado will host ISA TechTour, the traveling technical training program that brings ISA’s expert trainers and premier instructional resources to your doorstep. At the end of September, ISA Technician New skillsTraining Boot Camp kicks off the fall edition of ISA’s comprehensive educational program, ISA Technical Training Camp, which will continue through the month of October in Houston, Tex.

Installing, Calibrating, and Maintaining Electronic Instruments (TI25)
This popular course offers a combination of practical information and hands-on experience, covering proper installation, calibration  and maintenance of electronic instruments. You will examine characteristics of electronic control systems; techniques for installing electronic instruments; and procedures for configuring and calibrating transmitters, transducers and controllers. Approximately 40 percent of your time in this course is spent working with equipment. The 4.5-day will be offered in three locations during September.  It starts 9 September at ISA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C., and will be held on 16 September in Marietta, Ga. and Wilmington, Calif.

Tuning Control Loops (TC05)
This course is directed to anyone who would like to gain a better understanding of how to tune control loops − whether they have tuned loops but would like to become more proficient or they have never tuned a loop before. Registrants are expected to have a basic understanding of instrumentation and controls (either by working experience or taking fundamental courses such as ISA’s FG07: Introduction to Industrial Automation and Control) as this course does not cover that material. The three-day course starts 9 September in King of Prussia, Penn.

Certified Control Systems Technician® (CCST®) Level I Review Course (TS00E)
ISA’s CyberU online instructor-led training course offers the benefit of a high-quality ISA training course with the added advantage of studying at your own pace in the office, at home or while traveling. This online course utilizes online training modules, additional text materials, online evaluations, and email discussions. Students will have access via email to an instructor and have an opportunity to participate in live Q&A sessions with the instructor and other class participants. The 10-week Web class starts 9 September.

Control Systems Engineering (CSE) PE Exam Review Course (EN00)
This course reviews the knowledge and skills areas that are included on the Control Systems Engineer (CSE) Professional Engineer (PE) examination produced by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and administered by U.S. state professional license boards each October. The intent of the class is to prepare an engineer with four or more years of experience to take the exam by providing instruction in the broad range of technical areas that will be tested. . The content is based on the CSE Exam Specification that went into effect in October 2011. The three-day course starts 10 September in Burbank, Calif.

Developing and Applying Standard Instrumentation and Control Documentation (FG15)
This course will present the methodology for designing and developing control systems documentation. The development of piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) and related ISA drawings are emphasized. This course covers both the development and the reading/interpreting of these documents, making it beneficial to engineers, designers, software programmers, system integrators, and technicians. The two-day class starts 10 September in Houston, Tex.

Using the ANSI/ISA99 (IEC 62443) Standards to Secure Your Industrial Control System (IC32)
The move to using open standards such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, and Web technologies in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and process control networks has begun to expose these systems to the same cyberattacks that have wreaked so much havoc on corporate information systems. This course provides a detailed look at how the ANSI/ISA99 standards can be used to protect critical control systems. It also explores the procedural and technical differences between the security for traditional IT environments and those solutions appropriate for SCADA or plant floor environments. The two-day course will be offered twice during the month.  It starts 10 September in King of Prussia, Penn. and 23 September in Columbia, Ill.

Troubleshooting Instrumentation and Control Systems (TC10)
This course presents a systematic approach to troubleshooting and start-up of single- and multi-loop control loops. You'll see how pressure, level, flow, and temperature loops operate to maintain good process control systems. Knowledge of instrumentation and control is assumed. The two-day class starts 12 September at ISA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Advanced Industrial Cybersecurity (TS13)
This advanced course will expand your practical knowledge of cybersecurity technologies as applied to an industrial setting. The course will familiarize you with the latest developments in cybersecurity, including practical guides to design, implementation and testing industrial networks and applications to ensure their security and reliability in an industrial production environment. The course will discuss the functions and purposes of the elements used to create and protect an industrial network. The 4.5-day course starts 16 September in Houston, Tex.

Introduction to Industrial Automation and Control (FG07)
This course combines lecture and hands-on labs to provide an overview of industrial measurement and control. Technicians, engineers and managers are provided with a foundation for communication with other control system professionals. This class serves as a solid fundamental course for introduction to other ISA courses. The 4.5-day class will be offered in three locations during the month. The course starts 9 September in Houston, Tex. and 16 September in King of Prussia, Penn. The class, which is part of the Colorado ISA TechTour in September, also starts 23 September in Denver, Colo.

ISA Technician Training Boot Camp (TTBC)
This five-day training program combines a unique technical training course − minimum lecture and maximum hands-on experience − with bonus features, including a plant tour, technical library and social events, to enhance the learning experience and to maximize knowledge gained. More than 75 percent of your time will be spent on equipment labs. This week of intensive training will cover a broad range of technical topics needed to get the job done right. Starting with basic instrumentation fundamentals and ending with the advanced and ultimate in smart technology, this comprehensive program will serve as a vital building block to your professional development and skills enhancement efforts. It will be held at ISA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C. starting 16 September.

PLC/PAC Automation: Basic Structure, Programming, Installation, and Maintenance (TC30P)
This course defines Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) architecture, configuration, installation, maintenance, and programming. This course is generic with its content covering all the various PLC vendors today. More than 50 percent of the class is hands-on laboratory exercises. The five-day class starts 16 September in Columbia, Ill.

Certified Control Systems Technician® (CCST®) Level I Review Course (TS00)
Take this review course and schedule an electronic CCST exam on the date and at the location of your choosing − at no additional fee. (Note: The exam fee will be waived only if you attend the review course and you meet CCST qualifications.) You must submit a CCST application and your course registration form six weeks prior to your course date to be eligible for this offer. Upon approval of your application, you will receive an eligibility letter with instructions on when and how to schedule your exam electronically. The three-day class starts 17 September in Burbank, Calif.

Advanced Operation of Digital (Smart) Transmitters and Digital Valve Controllers (TS16)
This lab-intensive course focuses on the configuration fundamentals, the calibration process, the measurements of multiple variables, and the utilization of computer-based configuration tools for both digital transmitters and digital valve controllers. This course offers hands-on, working knowledge of smart field devices with an emphasis on measurement accuracy, advanced information gathering, decreased maintenance time, ease-of-configuration and calibration, and diagnostic capabilities. The 4.5-day class, which is part of the Colorado ISA TechTour in September, starts 23 September in Denver, Colo.

Electrical Systems and Principles (TI15)
This course covers electrical principles and components used in industrial instrumentation, emphasizing safety. The material covered includes using schematic symbols, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and basic test equipment. This course serves as an excellent overview for those who have never had electrical training and as a refresher/update for those who have had electrical training (though not too advanced) sometime ago. An understanding of basic algebra is expected. The three-day course starts 23 September at ISA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Industrial Flow Measurement Engineering (EI10)
This three-day course presents the principles and applications of modern flow measurement systems. Emphasis is on flowmeter accuracy, performance, system design, sizing, specification, installation and maintenance requirements. The class starts 25 September in Columbia, Ill.

Industrial Electronics (TI20)
This course introduces the theory and practical application of industrial electronic components. The emphasis is on safety, electrostatic discharge damage, and prevention. An understanding of basic electrical systems is assumed. The two-day class starts 26 September at ISA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

IT Survival Basics for I&C Personnel (TS14)
This course will provide I&C personnel with a basic understanding of IT concepts and technology including Ethernet networking, switches, routers, servers, PCs and firewalls, as well as wireless Ethernet networks and TCP/IP communications. The student will learn how to configure them and how cybersecurity is applied to protect them. Upon completion of this course, individuals will have a familiarity with basic IT concepts and technology which will enable them to effectively collaborate and communicate with IT personnel and perform basic IT functions essential in a modern plant and with modern control systems technology. The five-day class starts 30 September at ISA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

ISA Technician Training Boot Camp
ISA Technician Training Boot Camp (not just for technicians) combines a unique technical training course—minimum lecture and maximum hands-on experience—with bonus features, including a plant tour, technical library, and social events, to enhance the learning experience and to maximize knowledge gained. More than 75 percent of your time will be spent on equipment labs. This week of intensive training will cover a broad range of technical topics needed to get the job done right. Starting with basic instrumentation fundamentals and ending with the advanced and ultimate in smart technology, this comprehensive program will serve as a vital building block to your professional development and skills enhancement efforts. This course also serves as a solid introduction to other ISA courses that will help you advance your automation and control career. ISA Technician Training Boot Camp starts 30 September in Houston, Tex. The educational program is part of ISA Technical Training Camp, which provides the opportunity to gain comprehensive technician, automation engineering, controls, tuning, cybersecurity and digital communications training via ISA’s subject-matter experts. ISA will conduct six of its most in-depth technical training courses over five consecutive weeks starting with Technician Training Boot Camp.
