Survey after survey of industrial engineers confirms LinkedIn is the social media platform of choice. According to IEEE Engineering360, more than 65 percent of engineers say they are active on LinkedIn. Facebook was next up, at 48 percent, followed by Google Plus (32 percent) and YouTube (27 percent).

It makes sense. Facebook may have a higher number of users, but LinkedIn is the established platform for business. Globally, more than 400 million people use LinkedIn to network with other professionals as well as research industry news, discuss products and get technical help. And it's often the first destination for HR managers and job recruiters looking to hire, or companies performing due diligence in conjunction with a business proposal or potential partnership opportunity. When you engage on LinkedIn, people often first turn to your background and experience.

So if you haven't updated your LinkedIn profile in a while, you may be missing out on professional networking, career and new business opportunities. This infographic highlights key elements of a LinkedIn profile. Remember that LinkedIn can send alerts to your connections (it's an option in settings, under privacy) whenever you make changes, so think of regular profile updates as another way to reach out to your connections.
