Getting the Most out of an ISA Student Membership

This post was authored by Leo Staples, senior manager, utility operational compliance, at OGE Energy Corp. Leo is an ISA Fellow and was ISA president in 2011.

How can students expand their technical bases and pick up the interpersonal skills hiring employers want? ISA student membership offers many opportunities for professional enhancement. Here are a few:

Leadership opportunities: There are many opportunities besides being an officer. Students can set up meetings. events, or activities. This helps develop organizational, networking, and project management skills.

  • Contact opportunities with automation professionals: Student sections are aligned with member sections, where professional networking can begin.
  • Mentoring opportunities: The ISA Mentor Program enables young professional ISA members and student members to access the expertise of seasoned ISA members.
  • Service opportunities: Volunteering with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) through ISA, which demonstrates participation, leadership, and the capacity for mentoring.

Would you like to get involved with an ISA student section? ISA sponsors student sections at colleges and universities around the world. Click this link to learn more and find a section near you.
